Hi！Here is a huge response as it's something a mutual of mine on TikTok wrote a while back． Closed cultures are cultures that are not open to being shared by outsiders or foreigners. These cultures are usually ones with long histories of being stolen or whitewashed, & are typically cultures that are dying out & cannot afford more gentrification. A good example of a genuine closed culture would be indigenous tribes. The system community seems to be thoroughly convinced that any minority culture is suddenly closed, & have taken to policing or forcing introjects to change their names. This is most common with Japanese names. Japanese culture is not closed, however, people are so quick to call it a closed culture because they link simply using a name to cultural appropriation. Japanese culture is extremely accepting of foreigners, even encouraging them to use their names & partake in their traditions. Now, this is very different if someone is genuinely fetishizing a culture or attempting to claim alter race, but simply liking & using a name does not mean they are appropriating. Gatekeeping & isolating open cultures will lead to them dying out. Culture is a beautiful thing that is meant to be shared & enjoyed! Most cultures are very open to this sharing, except for if practices are actively trying to be reclaimed. (As I said before, a good example of a genuinely closed culture would be indigenous tribes) Cultural appropriation is simply the act of adopting cultural elements in an offensive, stereotypical, or exploitive way. Simply using a name typically does none of this, & yet the system community won't let the ideology go. They have a huge problem with caring too much, to put it bluntly. A name is not harming you, but "cultural names" are blacklisted in almost every syscord server ever. It's not as bad as some people are making it out to be. In conclusion, simply do a bit of research if you have a "cultural" name, especially if it's indigenous. Not every single minority group ever is a closed culture. In fact, most of them aren't at all, so do not stress yourself out thinking about useless controversies like this.
